Job Description
We are currently seeking a Metal Estimator for our client located in Lyman, SC. In this role you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for projects involving the cutting, shaping, and assembly of metal components by gathering and analyzing information from specifications, blueprints, proposals, and other documentation. Responsibilities:
- Analyzing Blueprints and Specifications: Reviewing technical drawings, blueprints, and project specifications to understand the scope of work and material requirements.
- Material Costing: Determining the types, quantities, and costs of raw materials needed, such as steel, aluminum, or various alloys.
- Labor Costing: Estimating the time and labor required for various fabrication processes, including cutting, welding, bending, machining, and finishing.
- Solicit and evaluate bids from vendors and subcontractors to ensure accurate pricing and scope coverage.
- Overhead and Equipment Costs: Factoring in indirect costs like equipment usage, utilities, and shop overhead.
- Generating Quotes and Proposals: Preparing detailed, itemized cost estimates and formal proposals for clients.
- Collaboration: Working closely with sales, engineering, purchasing, and production teams to ensure that estimates are accurate and projects can be completed as quoted.
- Risk Assessment: Identifying potential challenges or risks that could impact the project timeline or budget and incorporating contingencies into the estimate.
- Staying Current: Keeping up-to-date with industry trends, material costs, and new fabrication technologies to improve estimating accuracy.
- Maintain an updated database of material costs, labor rates, and productivity metrics.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations as needed.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and industry regulations.
- Support continuous improvement efforts in estimating processes and tools.
- Occasional travel may be required based on business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in estimating within [specify industry—e.g., manufacturing, construction, mechanical, or electrical].
- Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- Excellent blueprint reading and technical drawing interpretations abilities.
- In-depth knowledge of metal fabrication processes (welding, cutting, forming, finishing)
- Proficiency with estimating software, Microsoft Excel, and ACAD
- Relevant industry experience, often starting in the shop floor as a fabricator or welder before moving into an estimating role.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
